Antalya Factory Conversion — Power Systems, SCADA & IT Integration
Electrical infrastructure redesign, SCADA-based power monitoring, and IT integration for the conversion of a transformer manufacturing facility into a plastic injection molding factory.
Project Overview
This project involved converting a former electrical transformer manufacturing facility in Antalya, TR, into a plastic injection molding factory producing plastic products for food-contact applications.
The scope covered electrical infrastructure redesign, replacement and commissioning of power distribution panels, SCADA integration, and the deployment of IT infrastructure supporting production, security, and internal shipment tracking. The objective was to establish a centrally monitored and controlled power infrastructure suited to the facility’s new manufacturing operations.
My Role & Contribution
My responsibilities spanned electrical design and approval coordination, panel installation and commissioning, power monitoring and control, and production network infrastructure.
I brought together electrical distribution, automation, and IT systems to support the factory’s operational requirements. This included configuring power and network connections for injection molding machines, integrating remote management of backup power equipment, and establishing infrastructure for security and logistics systems.
Electrical Infrastructure Redesign
The change in manufacturing activity required the existing electrical distribution infrastructure to be reconfigured for the new production layout.
Unused power panels inherited from the previous operation were decommissioned. New electrical designs were prepared for the factory’s requirements and taken through the necessary approval process, followed by installation and commissioning of replacement panels.
The panels were organized into functional groups, enabling power distribution and switching operations to be supervised and controlled from the central computer room.
SCADA-Based Power Monitoring & Control
SCADA—Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition—was introduced to improve operational visibility and support safer, more accountable management of the electrical infrastructure.
Implementation began with the power distribution panels, bringing data acquisition, status monitoring, control, alarm management, and reporting into a central supervisory environment. This extended power management beyond local panel operation to include remote supervision and control.
Remote management of the backup power system was incorporated initially through Modbus TCP and subsequently through SNMP, connecting the equipment to the central management environment.
Production & IT Infrastructure
Power supplies and network connections for the plastic injection molding machines were configured to support the SCADA-connected production environment. Electrical and communication requirements were addressed together as part of the factory conversion.
Schneider Electric supplied much of the automation infrastructure, reducing the need for a mixed-vendor implementation and simplifying system integration.
The wider scope included the production network and infrastructure supporting security cameras, sensors, automated doors, and internal shipment tracking. These systems extended the work from electrical distribution into the infrastructure required for day-to-day factory operations.
Outcome & Professional Development
The project established a redesigned power distribution infrastructure for the new manufacturing operation, with centralized monitoring and control of the power panels. It also provided power and network infrastructure supporting production equipment, security systems, and internal logistics.
For me, this was an opportunity to extend power management experience gained in shopping mall retail installations into a more comprehensive industrial automation environment. Working with SCADA broadened my practical understanding of how monitoring, alarms, and reporting contribute to the operation of electrical systems.
The Antalya factory conversion brought together my experience in electrical engineering, automation, and IT infrastructure within a single industrial redevelopment project.
